20 Augu. TAG Heuer Monaco - The King of Cool

After its scene-stealing debut on Steve McQueen’s wrist in the 1971 film Le Mans, the TAG Heuer Monaco will forever be cemented in motor racing history.

Launched in 1969, the Monaco was a revolutionary watch for its time – its fire-red chronograph hand, metallic blue dial, domed crystal, and big, squared-off case represented a complete break with the conventional codes of watch design. But the watch first captured the celebrity and racing world when it was worn on the wrist of the legendary ‘King of Cool’, Steve McQueen.

While preparing for his role as racing driver, Michael Delaney, in the iconic cinematic tribute to the 24 Hours of Le Mans road race, McQueen wanted his character to be as authentic as possible. From the clothes on his back, to the watch on his wrist. McQueen consulted with his close friend and Grand Prix champion, Jo Siffert. Siffert had just signed a legendary endorsement deal with Heuer, making him the first watch-brand ambassador in racing history. For his portrayal of Delaney, McQueen wore a replica of Siffert’s white racing suit with the Heuer logo emblazoned on the chest. When it came to selecting his watch, the ground-breaking Heuer Monaco had just been launched and McQueen insisted on wearing it in the film. This cemented history for Heuer with the Monaco quickly becoming the preferred watch of the celebrity and racing world —earning its name as the “McQueen Monaco”.

In July 2012 the Monaco chronograph worn by Steve McQueen for the still photography of the film Le Mans, was sold at auction for an astounding USD 650,000.

Today, the re-interpretations of the Monaco are just as legendary as the first.

This week we are thrilled to announce the arrival of the Monaco Calibre 6 Special Edition to the TAG Heuer Flagship stores. The daring new all-black timepiece features a black titanium carbide-coated case (with special fine-brushed and polished finishings) and crown, black dial with white luminescent markers and high-contrast red small second hand, and a black sub-counter with opalin finishing. The perforated calfskin leather strap with red lining adds that final touch of McQueen swagger.
